While treating your acne problem holistically is the best way to get clear skin, sometimes you need to treat a blemish on the spot.

Even if you have found an effective acne treatment program and experience clear skin most of the time, sometimes an acne blemish just pops up. This can be due to stress, a reaction to makeup, a skin care problem or a sudden shift in your hormones. If you suffer from ongoing acne, treating your inflammatory acne blemishes is a daily activity. Whether you’re trying to treat a rare blemish that just showed up on your skin one day or trying to get rid of acne blemishes as part of a larger acne treatment program, here are some important things to keep in mind about acne spot treatment.

Treating a Blemish Doesn’t Mean Popping or Picking at It!
Most importantly, you should never pick at or pop an acne blemish or pimple. Picking at or popping acne blemishes can irritate the infection further, causing the blemish to get worse and possibly spreading infection and causing more breakouts. Additionally, picking at or popping pimples significantly increases your chance of developing a post acne mark or acne scar. You want your blemish to heal and go away without leaving you any post-breakout souvenirs. Picking at or popping blemishes doesn’t help them to heal or clear up, and it increases the likelihood that you’ll have marks and scars for a long time to come. Yes, it’s tempting and sometimes hard to resist. But no matter what you do, do not pick at or pop your acne blemishes!

Don’t Use an Acne Spot Treatment That Will Over-Dry and Irritate Your Skin
One of the steps of healing an acne blemish is to dry it out so that the infected blemish and skin flake away. However, many acne spot treatments contain harsh ingredients and acne medications, such as Benzoyl Peroxide, which can actually over-dry your skin. When you over-dry an acne blemish and the skin surrounding it, you risk irritating the skin. This can create more dry skin cells, which can further clog your pores and create more acne causing bacteria, resulting in even more blemishes. Murad’s Acne Spot Treatment contains Sulfur, which dries and heals breakouts without irritating the skin. In fact, Sulfur has natural reparative properties and has been used as both an acne remedy and a general skin care remedy for healthy skin for thousands of years.
The other problem with over-drying spot blemishes as you attempt to get rid of them is that you can increase the damage to your skin, which may result in an acne scar or post-acne mark. If you are using products to dry out your spot blemish, make sure that you’re also using an oil-free moisturizer to topically hydrate and also keeping your skin hydrated from within by eating your water.
